The Physical Oceanography Group of the University of Málaga (GOFIMA) participated to the European Geoscience Union General Assembly 2016, hold in Vienna (Austria) from 17th to 22nd of April 2016.
The group has been represented by Cristina Naranjo Rosa and Simone Sammartino, who presented two posters about their research being carried out in the Strait of Gibraltar. Their contributions are:
Single-ping ADCP measurements in the Strait of Gibraltar
Simone Sammartino, Jesús García Lafuente, Cristina Naranjo, José Carlos Sánchez Garrido and Ricardo Sánchez Leal
A new series of single-ping measurements of the current profile in the Espartel Sill (Strait of Gibraltar) has been gathered with the aim of investigating the high frequency variability of the current behavior in the boundary bottom layer. Some estimates of turbulence parameters have been provided and new insights on the very bottom structure of the Mediterranean outflow have been advanced.
Deep Mediterranean Water footprint measured in the Strait of Gibraltar during the last decade
Cristina Naranjo, Jesús García Lafuente, Simone Sammartino y José Carlos Sánchez Garrido
Temperature and Salinity has been measured from 2004 up to now near the seafloor in the Espartel Sill, in the western margin of the Strait of Gibraltar. The collected data shows the thermohaline properties of the Mediterranean Water flowing down toward the Atlantic Ocean. Significant trends have been found for the last decade for both, temperature and Salinity. The data reveal that the deep Mediterranean water is getting warmer, 0.0055 ºC/y, and saltier, 0.0001 psu/y.
