DESCRIPCIÓN

University of Algarve (UAlg) is a public HEI, it hosts more than 9.000 students. The core research and teaching areas are: science and technology, management and economy, earth and marine sciences, social sciences and more recently health. UAlg offers 56 graduate and 87 postgraduate programs. International projects in cooperation with other universities are reflected in its teaching and research activities fostering innovation.

In 2010, the University had 829 permanent teaching and research staff, 191 fellowship researchers and hosted 214 R&D projects, demonstrating a clear commitment towards R&D and innovation. UAlg has well-established research centres in several fields. Marine Science is one of the major areas of research. UAlg have two research centres in Marine Science (biologic and physical approaches). The two centres host 27% of the University researchers, contributing to a vibrant research environment.

The Environmental Marine Research Centre (CIMA) has developed during the last decade numerical models for Estuarine, Coastal and Regional Oceanography. Recently a high resolution operational ocean model was developed and successfully tested in the Tuscany Archipelago for oil spill forecasts, as part of the FP7 project ARGOMARINE. This enabled an active participation of the team in the Costa Concordia accident operations. The lessons learned there are now being used to create an operational set of models for the Coast of Algarve, which will benefit the OMEG.

CIMA is currently leading or participating in 24 research projects in those areas of marine sciences, mainly focusing in the Algarve región, which can contribute for the OMEG outputs.
